Iris Agate is a rare variety of finely banded agate renowned for its natural iridescence. When cut into thin sections and illuminated, the exceptionally fine layers within the chalcedony diffract light, producing vibrant flashes of rainbow colour without the need for any artificial enhancement.

Like all agates, Iris Agate formed over millions of years as successive layers of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony) were deposited inside cavities within volcanic rock. The incredibly fine banding, often far thinner than can be seen with the naked eye, is what creates the spectacular optical phenomenon for which Iris Agate is prized.
