This striking display has been created from natural Indonesian Iris Agate, a rare variety of finely banded agate that forms inside volcanic cavities through repeated deposits of silica-rich fluids over millions of years.
The remarkable rainbow colours are a completely natural optical phenomenon. Exceptionally fine microscopic silica layers diffract light into vivid spectral colours when illuminated, making Iris Agate one of the few gemstones capable of producing genuine rainbow diffraction. Small druzy quartz pockets preserved within the wings mark the final stage of crystal growth before the cavity was completely sealed.
