Description

This striking specimen features sharply formed dogtooth calcite crystals, naturally coated and included with hematite (iron oxide), giving the piece its rich red to deep earthy tones.

Scattered throughout the formation are small metallic inclusions of pyrite, adding subtle gold-like sparkle and contrast against the darker matrix.

The piece is further enhanced by areas of high-lustre “diamond calcite” - a trade name commonly used to describe particularly clear or sparkling calcite growth, often appearing as drusy or glass-like crystal faces.

Dogtooth calcite forms in mineral-rich hydrothermal environments, where calcite crystallises into elongated scalenohedral points. The presence of hematite and pyrite indicates iron- and sulphide-rich conditions during formation.
