Description

A highly textured natural Indonesian mineral specimen sold under the trade name “Indonesian Smithsonite”, featuring garnierite with associated quartz and natural matrix.

This Piece G is dominated by rich amber, honey and burnt-orange crystalline growth, forming layers of overlapping crystals around multiple open cavities. Fine seams and patches of distinctive green garnierite can be seen running through the specimen, creating flashes of colour amongst the warmer mineralisation.

The large central cavities expose even more crystal growth inside the specimen, giving the piece exceptional depth and making it fascinating to view from different angles.

“Indonesian Smithsonite” is a trade name used for Indonesian material containing nickel-bearing garnierite with associated silica or quartz. Despite the trade name, the material is not true smithsonite, which is a zinc carbonate mineral.

Garnierite develops through the weathering and alteration of nickel-rich ultramafic rocks. Green nickel-bearing mineralisation can occur within fractures and across the host rock, while silica-rich fluids may deposit quartz and chalcedony within cavities, producing the contrasting crystalline growth seen throughout this specimen.
